5 Tips for Healthy Hair Between Salon Visits

Keep your hair looking salon-fresh longer with these five expert-approved tips for healthy hair care at home.

A great salon appointment can last — but only if you’re taking care of your hair between visits.

The habits you build at home have a bigger impact on your hair’s health, color longevity, and overall appearance than most people realize. Here are five things your stylist actually wants you to do.

1. Wash Less Often Than You Think

Over-washing is one of the most common culprits behind dry, frizzy, and color-faded hair. Shampoo strips natural oils from the scalp and hair shaft — oils that your hair genuinely needs to stay healthy and hydrated.

Most people do well washing two to three times per week. If you have fine hair or an oily scalp, you might need to wash more often, but experiment with stretching the time between washes using dry shampoo to give your scalp a chance to regulate.

A good rule of thumb: if your hair doesn’t feel dirty, it probably isn’t.

2. Use a Heat Protectant Every Time

If you use a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron without a heat protectant, you’re causing cumulative damage every single session. Protein bonds in the hair shaft break down under repeated high heat, leading to split ends, breakage, and dullness over time.

Heat protectants don’t have to be elaborate — a lightweight spray or cream applied before styling creates a barrier between your hair and the heat source. Apply it to damp hair before blow drying, or to dry hair before using hot tools.

Make it a non-negotiable step in your routine.

3. Deep Condition Once a Week

Regular conditioner is designed to smooth the cuticle after washing. Deep conditioners and hair masks go further — they penetrate the hair shaft to restore moisture and strengthen the hair from the inside out.

Once a week, swap your rinse-out conditioner for a mask:

  • Apply from mid-shaft to ends (avoid the scalp unless it’s very dry)
  • Leave it on for 5–20 minutes depending on the product
  • Rinse thoroughly with cool water to seal the cuticle

If your hair is color-treated, look for a mask specifically formulated for color protection — it’ll extend vibrancy between appointments.

4. Sleep on a Satin or Silk Pillowcase

Cotton pillowcases create friction against the hair shaft as you move during the night, which contributes to frizz, breakage, and faster fading for color-treated hair. Satin and silk have a much smoother surface that allows hair to glide rather than tug.

It’s a small change with a surprisingly noticeable difference — especially if you have fine, fragile, or chemically treated hair. A loose satin hair wrap or bonnet works just as well if you prefer not to change your pillowcase.

5. Get Regular Trims — Even When Growing It Out

It feels counterintuitive, but trimming actually helps you grow longer, healthier hair over time. Split ends don’t stay split — they travel up the hair shaft and cause breakage higher up if left unchecked. That breakage offsets any length you’re trying to gain.

A trim every 8–12 weeks removes the damaged ends before they become a bigger problem. For color-treated or chemically processed hair, more frequent trims (every 6–8 weeks) are often recommended.

Talk to your stylist about a schedule that fits your hair’s current condition and your length goals.

The Bigger Picture

Healthy hair is built over time through consistent habits — not single products or one-off treatments. Start with these five, stay consistent, and you’ll notice a real difference in how your hair looks and feels between appointments.

When in doubt, ask your stylist at your next visit. They’ll give you personalized recommendations based on your specific hair type and history.
