Hearing Aid Fitting
Your Hearing Aid Fitting: What to Expect
A professional hearing aid fitting in Allentown, PA at Allen Audiology goes beyond placing new hearing aids in your ears. The audiologist programs your hearing aids for your hearing loss, verifies output with real-ear measurement, and balances clarity and comfort. Daily care and insertion of aids is reviewed to ensure optimal functioning of your hearing aids.
Why Your Hearing Care Professional Verifies Every Fit
Hearing aids that aren't properly fitted often sit unused. At Allen Audiology, every fitting includes real-ear measurement and prescription verification. A tiny microphone in your ear canal confirms prescription targets. A proper fitting completed by your hearing care professional is crucial and increases the likelihood of experiencing the full benefits of hearing aids.

“The doctor could have easily sold me a product that I don't need, but she was honest and up front, advising that the benefits would not override the drawbacks. Very impressed with the honesty and professionalism!”— James Davis

Frequently Asked Questions
Plan on about 60 minutes for your initial fitting. During a hearing aid fitting, the hearing aids are programmed, which includes running real-ear measurement checks, balancing clarity, sound quality, and comfort. Instructions on how to clean, insert, remove, and charge hearing aids are also part of the hearing aid fitting. In some cases, the fitting includes helping to pair a cell phone to the hearing aid.
Real-ear measurement (REM) is a verification technique where a thin probe microphone is placed in your ear canal alongside your hearing aid. It measures the actual sound output at your eardrum and compares it to your audiologist's prescription targets — ensuring the fit is accurate, not just estimated.
Studies show that fittings verified with REM produce significantly better outcomes than those relying on manufacturer first-fit software alone.
Some people adjust to hearing aids very quickly, and others take longer. Often, hearing loss happens gradually over time. Your brain adapts to hearing loss so that even though you don't have normal hearing, it will be your "normal". When you first get hearing aids, certain sounds may seem unnatural because you aren't used to hearing those sounds. As you wear your hearing aids consistently, you will adjust. Wearing your hearing aids only occasionally will make it much more difficult to adjust.
Yes. Every hearing aid purchase at Allen Audiology includes follow-up adjustment visits as part of your personalized service plan. Most people return for a 2-week check after the fitting. We will see how you are doing at your two-week check and then determine what other follow-ups will be needed. Once you are doing great with your new hearing aids, we will send you a postcard for 6 mo check ups, or you will call and schedule an appointment sooner as needed.
